Where we stand. wedtream.online is an independent information service for mobile customers in the United Kingdom. We are not a mobile network. We have no affiliation with, endorsement from, appointment by or connection to Three, EE, O2, Vodafone, Sky Mobile, Tesco Mobile or any other provider, and no commercial arrangement with any of them. We do not sell, supply, arrange or broker SIM cards, contracts, handsets or services of any kind, and we take no commission from anybody. Everything here is general information; a provider's own current terms always take precedence.

01 Choosing a length

Quick take: Good

The gap between a rolling monthly plan and a two-year one is a few pounds. That is not really the choice. What a rolling plan buys is the right to walk away if the signal disappoints or your circumstances change.

Your situationSensible choice
A new address you have never lived atRolling
A network you have never usedRolling
A job or living arrangement that may changeRolling
Settled home, signal already provenFixed term
Several people on one accountFixed term, with multi-line reductions

02 Sizing the allowance

Quick take: Fair

Nobody needs to guess this. Your provider's app records exactly what you used, and three months covers holidays, unusual weeks and everything else. Buy that measured average with a little headroom.

Watch outHandle a single unusual month with a one-off add-on. A permanently larger tier to cover one heavy month means paying for eleven months you did not need.

03 Making a smaller allowance stretch

Quick take: Good

Two changes cost nothing and usually achieve more than upgrading would.

  1. Drop video quality one step inside the streaming app.
  2. Restrict backups, photo sync and app updates to home Wi-Fi.
  3. Switch off autoplay video in social apps.
  4. Download anything you will watch twice rather than streaming it twice.

04 The free safeguards

Quick take: Good
SafeguardWhat it does
Spend capStops any charge beyond your allowance. Free, about a minute in the app
Cash-terms disclosureAny mid-contract rise must be stated in pounds and pence before you sign
Exit itemisationAny leaving charge is disclosed before you commit
The annual reviewTen minutes a year catches the quiet drift after a term ends
